Getting started
How Tiller works and what to expect.
How long does it really take?
About 45 minutes for the full guided session, give or take. You can pause and resume at any time. Many people do it across two or three evenings.
Can I do this with my partner?
Yes — and we recommend it. The Couples plan gives each of you a complete, private plan, plus a shared session for joint decisions like naming each other as decision-makers.
What do I need to get started?
Just yourself, your province, and an hour or so. You don’t need any documents in advance. If you have an existing will or power of attorney, you can reference it later.
Do I have to finish in one sitting?
Definitely not. Tiller autosaves every answer. You can step away mid-question and pick up months later if you need to.
Where Tiller works
Which parts of Canada Tiller supports today.
Which provinces and territories does Tiller support?
Every Canadian province and territory except Quebec at launch: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Tiller generates the right document for wherever you live.
I live in Quebec — can I use Tiller?
Not yet. Quebec has its own distinct advance-directive system (the Régime de directives médicales anticipées), and we want to support it properly rather than approximately. It’s on our roadmap. Email eric@tilleracp.com and we’ll let you know the moment Tiller is ready in Quebec.
What if I want Tiller somewhere it isn’t yet?
We’re working to make Tiller available to every Canadian. If your jurisdiction isn’t covered the way you need, email eric@tilleracp.com — knowing where the demand is helps us prioritize what comes next.
Legal & medical
Validity, lawyers, and how this fits with the rest of your paperwork.
Is the document Tiller produces legally formatted?
Yes. Tiller produces an advance care planning document formatted to meet the legal requirements of your province (every Canadian province and territory except Quebec at launch).
Do I need a lawyer?
No. Advance care planning in Canada does not require a lawyer. Tiller walks you through the conversation, generates the document, and tells you exactly how to make it official in your province, usually with a witness or two and a signature.
Is this the same as a will?
No. A will deals with your assets after you’ve died. An advance care plan deals with medical decisions while you’re alive but unable to communicate. Most Canadians need both.
Does this replace a Power of Attorney?
It depends on your province. In some provinces (like Ontario), naming a substitute decision-maker is part of your Power of Attorney for Personal Care. Tiller produces the right advance care planning document for your province.
Will my doctor accept this?
Yes. The documents Tiller generates are the same legally recognized forms hospitals and family physicians work with.
Privacy & data
Where your answers live, and who can see them.
Who sees my answers?
Only you and the people you choose to share with. To keep Tiller safe and accurate, a small team at Tiller Labs may review de-identified excerpts — your name and contact details stripped — for quality assurance, or to follow up on specific issues that get flagged. Your answers are encrypted, and never sold or used to train external AI models.
Where is my data stored?
Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. As a Canadian company, we follow PIPEDA — Canada’s federal privacy law — and applicable provincial privacy law.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, any time — just ask. When you request deletion, we delete your account and the data tied to it, and it rolls out of our backups within 30 days.
Family & sharing
How to bring the people who matter into the loop.
How do I share my plan with my family?
Once your plan is finalized, Tiller generates shareable PDFs you can send to your substitute decision-maker. We also include a printable conversation guide for your first chat about it.
Can I make my loved one do this?
No, but you can make it easier. Many people gift Tiller to a loved one and offer to sit with them while they go through it.
What if my family disagrees with my wishes?
A signed advance care plan is a legal document, and your care team is expected to follow it. In most provinces the person you name — your substitute decision-maker or agent — has the authority to make decisions on your behalf, using your plan as their guide. Tiller helps you have the conversation in advance so disagreements are aired before a crisis, not during one.
Updates & changes
Your plan should grow with you.
What if I change my mind later?
Your plan is meant to evolve. Your plan includes two updating conversations a year, and Tiller helps you re-share with the people who need the new version.
How often should I update my plan?
Tiller sends a gentle reminder once a year to review your plan. Even if nothing has changed, we encourage you to log in and confirm. That way, your substitute decision-maker knows the document still reflects what you want today, not what you wrote down years ago.
What happens if Tiller goes out of business?
Your final plan is yours, on paper, and remains valid regardless of Tiller. If anything ever happened to Tiller, we’d give you advance notice so you could download a copy of your plan before the service wound down.
Pricing & billing
The money side.
Is there really no subscription?
Really. $79.99 once for an individual plan, $119.99 for a couple. No subscription, no recurring charges. Your plan includes two updating conversations a year, and we don’t charge for printing or sharing.
What’s your refund policy?
If Tiller doesn’t help you make a plan you feel good about within 30 days, we refund you in full. No questions, no awkward exit interview.
Can my employer pay for it?
Many employers are starting to support advance care planning as part of their wellness benefits. If you’d like Tiller covered, ask your HR team and feel free to put us in touch. Email eric@tilleracp.com and we’ll help make the case.
Still have a question?
We answer within one business day. If it’s urgent, just say so in the subject line.
